CHAPTER 7

THE PLAN

Lisa had a hard time getting to sleep every night the rest of that week. When Friday—game day— rolled around, she was tired and fed up.

“The grown-ups here at Day O’Connor have really let us down,” Lisa said to Claire and Bobbi when they met up in the advisory that morning. “Mr. Jones in safety, Ms. Rose in the office, whoever in maintenance should be fixing the cameras and locking the gym doors …”

“Why, Lisa,” Claire said, taking her friend’s hand, “is that a note of pessimism I hear in your voice?”

Lisa shook her head. “I don’t know what to do!” she moaned. “I try to stay positive, but someone is getting away with something really awful.”

“And there’s nothing we can do about it,” said Claire.

“Except freeze our butts off practicing outside,” Lisa said, slumping in her chair.

“And wait for the funds to show up to fix the gym,” Claire said.

“Ugh,” Bobbi said. “If only we had some of that camera footage! There are cameras all over the school. Who would have guessed they don’t even work?”

Lisa had an idea. “No one,” she said. “No one would have guessed.”

“Exactly,” Bobbi said. She crossed her arms and lowered her glare at the front of the room.

“No, you don’t understand,” Lisa said. “No one would have guessed.”

Claire gasped. “Including whoever did this!” she said. “I think I know what you’re thinking.”

“Someone wanna let me in on it?” Bobbi asked.

So Lisa told her the plan.
